How you weave the paths of insight and not so much sight has a particularity of hilarity! And the ghost of Monty Python is dying to do a show on this one : )
I love this salty insight into what goes on behind the scenes whilst we passenger class people are griping about late flights and small seats as if it didn't take a whole army of employees plus a little bit of magic to get just one flight off the ground, let alone the whole damn system. Request for future column: day in the life of an air traffic controller. Or maybe not.
While not generally a fan of hierarchy and being one who counts himself a relatively reliable advocate of democracy and functional bureaucracy in most situations, you provide a superb example of situations in which we expect The Man to be in charge …and the hierarchy and bureaucracy need TO LET HIM BE IN CHARGE! ...WAY too much for most of us to calculate and incorporate into our daily lives! Somehow the healthcare industry also comes to mind… Come to think of it, you provide a brilliant description of the multiple (and multiplying) insidious ways in which the capitalist world intrudes into and dominates much more rational worlds of yesteryear! Harrumph!

I practically spit my coffee out because I was laughing so hard at the picture with the caption "Paris without Blankets."
Hahahaha thanks Katherine. We are of similar minds— that one came out unbidden and made me feel I’d finally made something
